Overview

Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan for Norwich Survey

Norfolk County Council are working in partnership with Norwich City Council, Broadland District Council and South Norfolk Council to develop a Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan for the Greater Norwich region.

The objective of the plan is to identify and prioritise improvements which can be made to the active travel (cycling & walking) network over the short, medium and long term.

The plan supports the Governments ambition for cycling and walking to be the natural first choice for many journeys, with half of all journeys in towns and cities being cycled or walked by 2030.

This is because cycling and walking are good for our physical and mental health and by switching more journeys to active forms of travel we can help to reduce levels of congestion, improve air quality, benefit the environment and the local economy.

Although the current cycling and walking network routes and zones are well established in Greater Norwich, analysis has identified further improvements which can help increase safety, connectivity and accessibility across the region and support the wider delivery of a sustainable transport system for Norfolk.

The Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan for Greater Norwich includes improvement schemes for the active travel routes known locally as Pedalways. There are eight Pedalways in total, six stretch out across the city from St Andrew’s Plain in the centre and two more form an inner and outer circuit around the city.

There are also plans to improve pedestrian connectivity within two designated walking zones. The Norwich City Centre Core Walking Zone comprises of the historic heart of the city, and the UEA/ NRP Walking Zone serves the campus area of the University of East Anglia (UEA), the Norwich Research Park (NRP) and the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.

A number of cycling and walking initiatives are also being proposed which help and encourage people to use the network. These include cycle parking facilities, and cycle hire services and route sinage.
