We asked for your comments on the proposal to replace the ‘Hempnall Crossroads’ junction on the A140 in Long Stratton with a roundabout.

A report was taken to Environment, Development and Transport Committee on 18th May 2018 presenting the outcome of the consultation. 456 responses to the online questionnaire were received with over 93% of respondents either agreeing or strongly agreeing to the proposals. Some useful feedback was also received, including suggestions that a reduction in the speed limit on the A140 would be beneficial.

Our councillors considered the outcome of the consultation and approved the submission of a planning application for the scheme. Planning approval has now been granted. As part of the subsequent statutory consultation for the proposed change of speed limit from 60mph to 50mph on the minor arms (B1527 Hempnall Road and C497 Bungay Road) we received further feedback requesting a reduction in the speed limit on the A140. A reduction from 60mph to 50mph on the A140 adjacent to the new roundabout is now planned to be implemented as part of the scheme.

Comments were also received about a possible increase in traffic on the minor arms as a result of the scheme. We carried out traffic surveys on these roads in December 2018 so that we may compare these with surveys which will be undertaken after the schemes’ completion.

Overview

We are proposing to improve the junction of the A140 / B1527 Hempnall Road / C497 Bungay Road (locally known as Hempnall Crossroads) in Long Stratton by replacing the existing crossroads with a roundabout

If this proposal went ahead we think that it would:

- Help support economic growth and the development planned for this area

- Improve road safety at a junction with a history of accidents

- Improve access from side roads onto the A140

- Reduce delays

At this stage we would like your views on our proposed scheme.  We're particularly keen to hear about any local information, issues or concerns.

If you have any questions about this proposal please email us at HaveYourSay@norfolk.gov.uk
