Overview

Norfolk County Council (NCC) is working in partnership with local authorities to create a Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP) for Norfolk.

The purpose of the Countywide LCWIP is to help identify and prioritise short, medium and long-term active travel infrastructure schemes which will enable increased levels of cycling, walking and wheeling in the county.

The plan supports the Governments ambition for cycling and walking to be the natural first choice for many journeys, with half of all journeys in towns and cities being cycled or walked by 2030.

The Countywide Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan builds on plans already created for King’s Lynn, Greater Norwich and Great Yarmouth and includes proposals which could enable increased active travel connectivity within 20 towns across the county.

Analysis of proposed routes with the 20 towns has identified improvements which will enable more people to use the network by enhancing active travel safety, connectivity.

The infrastructure plan also includes schemes to increase connectivity between towns and with rural communities giving people access to green space and linking people with central services, places of education and employment.

A period of public engagement was held from the 18 May to the 13 July 2023. Residents and stakeholders were invited to comment on a proposed network of walking, cycling and wheeling routes in 20 towns across Norfolk, and on potential improvements to the Norfolk Trails network, to the National Cycle Network, and on potential routes between towns.

We would like to thank everyone who took the time to respond. Your views will help us develop a high-quality LCWIP to confidently put forward funding bids to deliver walking and cycling projects across Norfolk. The final plan is expected to be completed in early 2024.
